Oops!

Hello!

This is a special guest appearance by Helga, Sharon's daughter. She's asked me to update for her and let you all know what's going on.

Last Friday, while walking through her back yard in the dark, Sharon fell (she's still not sure what happened) and unfortunately broke her left arm near the shoulder. She went to the emergency room and received x-rays, painkillers and a brace to immobilise the area. She was told that once the swelling went down a little she could see an orthopedist to determine whether the break was a simple fracture or a compound fracture, and whether she would need surgery.

She went to see the orthopedist yesterday and was told she would need surgery. They performed the operation today and discovered that the break had two points of movement, which explained why she'd been in so much pain. They put in a plate with pins to hold the break, and the plate may or may not need to come out again once the bone has started to knit. She's spending tonight in the hospital.

She came through surgery just fine and is resting comfortably. (I'm sure she got the good drugs!) She should be going home tomorrow. She's been given an estimate of 3 - 4 months for recovery, but now that the surgery's been performed she should be through the worst of pain.

Any healing thoughts or well wishes are welcome with gratitude - no one will understand the pain of not being able to quilt much for 3 months like you will. (I imagine by the end it'll hurt much worse than the arm will.) I'll probably be making more guest appearances here to keep you updated, as typing with one hand isn't exactly easy, either. :)

  1. Give your Mom hugs and kisses from me. I had surgery on my shoulder (rotator cuff) years ago and I understand a bit of what she's going through. Thanks for the update and all the other help I am sure you are doing for your Mom.

  7. O-O-H-H...N-O-O!!!! I'm just sick....so sorry and sad!!! I may have 'Sharon' withdrawals before you get back around!!! I can't believe you did this...I bet you can't either...wow, what a bummer!
I had a friend who was out walking on the dirt road behind her house when her foot got caught on a loop of wire she didn't see...she fell and broke BOTH of her elbows!!! She laid out there a l-o-n-g time before she figured out a way to get up since her arms didn't work..isn't that wild. Well, you know I will be cheering you on for a speedy recovery. If I was your neighbor I would bring over a bowl of chicken soup!! Give her a 'squeeze' for us Helga!!

  9. OH NO! Poor Sharon!!! My theory is that if you would have stayed in California and never moved to Washington, you would not have broken that dang shoulder and you would be coming to retreat with us this weekend! Arm (no pun intended) yourself with colored pencils and graph paper and/or sketch paper and have fun designing. Luckily it's not your right arm. (I'm pretty sure you're right handed). Feel better quick, quick, quick.

  10. We just don't bounce like we used, do we? I very much understand what you're going through as I slipped on black ice last December and broke my ankle... ten screws, three pins, and a couple of plates later. I know it will be difficult to not be able to quilt for a few months. Cuddle underneath a comforting quilt and read a couple of good books. My prayers are with you.
